The Lužánky Park

If the visitors want to have a rest and avoid the buzz of the Moravian capital for a while, they can visit a natural English-style park in the size of almost 20 ha right in the center of town, literally a few steps away from Hotel Arte.

The Lužánky Park was established on the grounds of the former Jesuit monastery garden in 1787, in the area where a floodplain forest with a farmyard had once been. Soon the Lužánky Park became a popular trip destination, leisure time zone and social center of the town. In the middle of the 19th century, the area was rebuilt to the natural landscape park. This reconstruction was managed by Karel Offermann, Director of the Land Gardens of Lužánky and Františkov. Between 1853 and 1855, the neo-renaissance pavilion was built in the park, based on the project by Ludvík Förster and Theofil Hansen. In 1849, the General Assembly proclaimed the park the national monument. The Restaurant Pavilion, built in 1854 according to the project of the architect L. Förster, hosts the Free Time Center these days.

In the second half of the 19th century, new domestic and imported tree species appeared in the park, mainly due to the efforts of the garden designer Antonín Šebánek. At the end of the 19th century, all tree species growing in Moravia were present in Lužánky, together with more than 150 species of imported plants.

Since 1991, the park has been under reconstruction according to the project designed by Professor Ivar Otruba. Lužánky is now the oldest public town park in Czechia, the most important park in Brno and the official cultural monument.

Important features of the park:

  • The Restaurant Pavilion aka the Casino, neo-renaissance building built between 1853 and 1855, designed by L. Förster and T. Hansen
  • The fountain with the sculpture of three puttos, built in 1860 by F. Melnitzky
  • The statue of Josef Merhaut, built in 1931 by E. Hlavica
  • The statue of the Emperor Joseph II., the founder of the park (replica from 2001 – the original from 1888 was destroyed)
